Seven years in Shaolin - Shan Li, the German shaolin student
In the last 500 years, there have only been five non-Chinese who have been accepted into the inner-circle of the Shaolin Temple. Only one was able to endure the extreme conditions longer than 6 months. For the last seven years Christopher S. from Leipzig – named Shan Li by the Chinese – has been living in the famous Shaolin monastery in the Chinese province of Henan. Shan Li is an integrated part of this magical place, the origin of Chinese medicine, philosophy and religion. Shan Li allowed us to accompany him through his everyday life filled with continuous training of body and spirit, influenced by thousands of years of tradition in religion and martial arts. Filmfee is the first team worldwide to be granted unrestricted filming rights from the Abbot of the Shaolin Temple within the temple and with its monks. This trust was also displayed by the Chinese government, who allowed Filmfee to film with its Chinese Co-Producers without supervision. The project evolved into an insightful portrait of the area, the spirit, the residents, the true meaning of the work “Chan” or “Zen” and the Buddhist journey to this state. The film highlights Shan-Li’s fascination with the Shaolin Temple. Through Shan-Li, the bridge between cultures, and the exceptional filming conditions we were able to capture the true essence of the legend of Shaolin.

Sieben Jahre Shaolin - Shan Li, der deutscher Shaolin-Schüler
Shan Li ist Deutscher. Seit über sieben Jahren gehört er zum inneren Kreis des Shaolin Tempels in China. Dies ist eine enorme Auszeichnung für den aus Leipzig stammenden Mann, denn in den letzten fünfhundert Jahren gab es lediglich fünf Nicht Chinesen, die Einlass in den inneren Kreis fanden. Shan Li der in Deutschland eigentlich einmal Christoph S. hieß, wurde erst nach vielen Prüfungen im weltberühmten Shaolin Kloster in der chinesischen Provinz Henan aufgenommen. Heute ist Shan Li Teil dieses magischen Ortes, der sich zu Recht als Ursprung der chinesischen Heilkunde, Philosophie und Religion versteht. Shan Li lässt uns teilhaben an seinem Alltag. Einem Alltag des stetigen Trainings von Körper und Geist; einem Alltag geprägt von jahrtausendealten Traditionen, zwischen Religion und Kampfkunst. Er der einzige Ausländer, der es unter den extremen Bedingungen im Tempel länger aushielt: Minus 25 Grad im Zimmer, zwölf Stunden Kampf und Meditationstraining, strenge Regeln und Verzicht bestimmen sein heutiges Leben. Das Kamerateam erhielt erstmals exklusiv die Genehmigung ohne Einschränkung und Zensur den jungen Deutschen zu begleiten.

Siete años en Shaolin - Shan Li, el estudiante Alleman en Shaolin
Shan Li es alemán. Por más de siete años ha sido parte de un íntimo círculo en el Templo de Shaolin en China. Esto hace de él el primer extranjero que se mantuvo en la institución por tanto tiempo, viviendo en extremas condiciones. Normas estrictas, meditación, entrenamiento, doce horas de arte marcial por día y por sobre todo renunciación, un estado especial dentro del budismo. "Siete años en Saholin" acompaña durante varias jornadas a Shan Li en el recorrido de su vida cotidiana, una vida que eligió hace mas de siete años, cuando decidió viajar a China. Allí entró en la escuela de Kung Fu en una pequeña y perdida provincia llamada Henan y acercarse a las practicas budistas. Hoy es el único extranjero que vive allí y los habitantes de Henan le han dado el nombre que el adoptó como propio en esta nueva vida: Shan Li, que significa "Montaña Fuerte". Un equipo de cámara de Berlín es el primero y único medio autorizado para grabar la vida cotidiana de Shan Li. El resultado es budismo, arte marcial y leyenda.

Seven Years in Shaolin - Westerling wordt insider bij beroemde tempel
In de afgelopen 500 jaar is het maar vijf niet-Chinezen gelukt om volwaardig lid te worden van de gemeenschap van de beroemde Shaolin Tempel. En er is er maar één die de extreme omstandigheden langer dan zes maanden heeft weten vol te houden: Christopher S. uit Leipzig.
De Duitser, die door de Chinezen Shan Li wordt genoemd, heeft zeven jaar in het Shaolin klooster in de Chinese provincie Henan gewoond. Hij is nu onderdeel van deze magische plaats, de oorsprong van de Chinese ‘gezondheidskunde’, filosofie en religie. We volgen zijn dagelijks bestaan, dat gevuld is met constante training van lichaam en geest, beïnvloed door duizenden jaren van traditie in religie en gevechtskunst.
De film is een diepgravend portret van het gebied, de geest, de bewoners, en de ware betekenis van zen en de weg naar zen. Met Shan-Li als brug tussen twee culturen lukt het de ware aard van de legende van Shaolin blootleggen.
